Rock Trivia 101, Answer 4

July 10th, 2008 · No Comments

Were you able to get this answer or did you get stumped by it. If you were a fan of Ringo in the early 70’s you probably remember the other side of the old 45 which had “Your Sixteen” opposite the answer to this question. The Title for the tune is “Photograph” and I remember having the 45 in my collection very well. It reached #1 in the US Charts in 1973.

10 years later in 1983 on their huge hit “Pyromania” album, Def Leppard also did a song titled “Photograph”, obviously it sounded a little different than Ringo’s though. I’m not sure of the chart position it reached, but it definitely was one of the biggest hits on the album and of that year and cemented def leppard into rock history.

I hope this was challenging enough for you out there. Keep listening to classic rock!

King Crimson a True Original

June 20th, 2008 · No Comments

If asked to describe the music of King Crimson, you might describe it as prog rock meets Syd Barrett and teams up with Alan Holdsworth or John McLaughlin, but in all honesty, there is no one simple way to classify King Crimson because in all honesty, they are just a truly original band.

Coming about as a collaboration of Michael and Peter Giles and adding Guitarist Robert Fripp King Crimson blazed some uncharted territory for rock music from the very end of the sixties on and off again until the early 21st century (meaning no disrespect to any schizoid man thereabouts). Although the Giles Brothers haven’t been members since the early 70’s, the band has forged ahead mainly under the influence and vision of Robert Fripp.

Fripp is an enigma, as he basically inherited the mantle of leader by default, but has definitely over the years taken it to heart as well. Bringing in people such as Greg Lake (of Emerson, Lake and Palmer fame) early on and later Adrian Belew (most famous for his work with David Bowie) he utilized the most creative and unique styles available, including his own.

The self proclaimed inventor of “Frippertronics”, a tape loop system to create unusual guitar effects, Fripp also is widely regarded as one of the great improvisation guitarists right up there with John McLaughlin and Allan Holdsworth.

Their albums are equally unique starting with “In the Court of the Crimson King” in 1969, the title track itself is so spacey and far away sounding it reminded me of something the Moody Blues might have done only even more Out There. Coming out with songs like  ”21’st Century Schizoid Man” only made people more and more curious about the wild imaginings of Fripp, Belew and the rest.

Their most recent album “The Power to Believe” was released in 2003 and the current lineup includes Robert Fripp, Adrian Belew, Tony Levin, Pat Mastelotto and Gavin Harrison.

While admittedly, I haven’t listened to every note put out by them, I’ve heard enough to want to go back and rediscover this most unusual and Totally Original Band once again.

Rock Trivia 101 Answer 2

June 18th, 2008 · No Comments

Well, have you given up yet? I know this one was a little more obscure, but it has an interesting answer though.

The Name “Badfinger” came about as a result of the bands promotion by members of the Beatles. The song “With a Little Help From my Friends” was originally called “Badfinger Boogie” and I believe it was Paul McCartney thought it would be a cool name for this new band they were helping to get  a start.

Actually the original name of the song itself would have been a great trivia question in itself. Well until next time, keep sharpening your Music Trivia skills.

Rock Trivia 101 Question

June 16th, 2008 · No Comments

Here is a nice little question to stir your classic rock knowledge - Where did the Name for the Group “Badfinger” come from?

I always loved their music when I was young and what a tragedy with the two suicides in the band, they seemed to have so much promise and so much going for them, what a shame.

Anyway gnaw on that bone for a bit and see if you come up with the right answer, it may surprise you.

Rock Trivia 101 Answer

June 12th, 2008 · No Comments

Well, hopefully everybody was waiting for the answer to yesterday’s question, so I won’t keep you in suspense any longer -

The answer to Yesterday’s Question: Yes put out 2 Albums before Steve Howe Joined them, the self titled “Yes” album (not “The Yes Album” which coincidentally was Steve Howe’s First Album with them) and “Time and a Word”.

The Bonus Answer: Peter Banks was Steve Howe’s Predecessor in the band.

If you got either answer give yourself a pat on the back. If you got both, give yourself the Heimlich Maneuver.

Time for A Rock Trivia 101 Question

June 11th, 2008 · No Comments

From time to time I like to test out readers’ knowledge with a little trivia question so here goes. How many albums did “Yes” put out before Steve Howe Joined the band?

bonus question: Who Preceded Steve Howe as the Guitarist?

I hope this isn’t too easy for anyone, but it shouldn’t be really hard either, just a little brain teaser. I try to only ask questions, that I already actually know the answers to (hopefully), so try to get them without alot of extensive research if you can.
